This is a series of photographic work I did about India's education system and how varying teaching styles affect children. I started by looking at ashram schools, such as Omkarananda Hill Schools and institutes in Rishikesh. I was particularly keen to find out more about the role of ashram schools because of my own interests in ashram philosophy, as well as my personal experiences of living and studying in an ashram in Maharashtra in 2008.
I did discover that ashram schools provide a non-profit service for children. Rishikesh is a very developed area in terms of education and has many well established schools, many of which are private. But they do have a greater emphasis on on quality of education and I believe are a great example to the rest of India. I learnt that this particular ashram has very high standards, the founder himself said, 'The name 'Omkarananda' stands for high class quality'.
